Diagnostic Labs

Snohomish Naturopathic Clinic strives to make the highest quality diagnostic laboratory testing available to our patients.  Below are answers to commonly asked questions about specialty testing and a list of our most commonly ordered tests.

Can I use insurance for specialty labs?

Some specialty lab tests are covered by insurance and some aren't.  In addition, some laboratories bill insurance and some don't.  Our specialty laboratories that do bill insurance for running your tests collect a lab copay as part of a “preferred pay” program and promise not to balance bill you, even if your insurance refuses to pay.  In this case, you may receive an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) in the mail from your insurance company.  This is NOT a bill; it is simply an explanation of how your insurance decided to pay what the lab billed them.  If your insurance is Out-Of-Network with the lab, your insurance may pay you directly; it is your responsibility to forward this payment with the EOB to the lab in order to settle your account.

What testing does SNC offer?

We offer a variety of tests, the most common of which are listed below.  Additional tests, specific to your concerns, are available and may be ordered from one of several laboratories we use.

US Biotek

Food Allergy Panel

When the immune system recognizes a foreign substance, it produces antibodies to fight off the allergens. IgG and IgE are two different types of antibodies produced in allergic reactions to food. IgE reactions are immediate and usually more severe, such as hives, swelling of the tongue and sudden diarrhea. IgG reactions are more common and more subtle and can result in many other delayed symptoms such as chronic pain, sinusitis, constipation, diarrhea, bloating, gas, fatigue, abdominal pain, headache, joint pain and runny nose.  For the majority of patients we run the IgG panel which tests for reactivity to 96 different common foods.  Most of the time this test can be done with just a finger stick, not a blood draw!  For answers to frequently asked questions about this testing, click here.

US Biotek does not bill insurance: $179 IgG, $229 IgG & IgE, $125 IgA add-on; Sample Report

Spectracell

Lipoprotein Particle Testing

Cholesterol testing has historically been used as the standard indicator for cardiovascular disease classified as HDL (good) or LDL (bad). However, it is actually the lipoprotein particles that carry the cholesterol throughout the body, not necessarily the cholesterol within them, that are responsible for key steps in plaque production and the resulting development of cardiovascular disease.  Approximately 50 percent of people suffering from heart attacks have shown “normal” cholesterol numbers (NHLBI – The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute).  This advanced cholesterol testing technology accurately measures both the density and number of lipoprotein particles.

MicroNutrient Test

50% of people taking multi-vitamins are still nutritionally deficient (William Shive, UofT at Austin).  And yet, how do you discern which vitamins you need and which you don’t?  SpectraCell’s micronutrient testing offers a unique means to scientifically assess the intracellular requirements of micronutrients that play an important role in overall health and wellness of patients. Their tests measure the biochemical function of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants, providing a powerful clinical assessment tool. These panels are designed to provide you with the most comprehensive nutritional analysis available. As the only lab that can offer a truly functional intracellular testing, SpectraCell also provides you with targeted nutrient repletion recommendations for those vitamins and minerals found to be deficient.  Why are nutrients important?  Check out this handy nutrient chart here.  Did you know that some common prescriptions, while helpful in some ways, can also deplete nutrients from the body?  See if what you’re taking is on the list!

MTHFR

MTHFR is an enzyme responsible for converting 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate to the product 5-methyltetrahydrofolate - it is involved in the metabolism of folate and homocysteine as well as production of hormones, neurotransmitters, blood cells and DNA repair. The product of the reaction catalyzed by MTHFR converts homocysteine (a potentially toxic amino acid) to methionine (a useful and necessary amino acid).  Who Should be Tested?

  • Those with high homocysteine levels.
  • Those who have a familial history of cardiovascular disease, stroke or thrombosis.
  • Those who are candidates for long-term methotrexate therapy
  • Those with migraines, history of miscarriages, autism, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and restless leg syndrome.

Telomere Test

Telomeres are sections of genetic material at the end of each chromosome whose primary function is to prevent chromosomal “fraying” when a cell replicates. As a cell ages, its telomeres become shorter. Eventually, the telomeres become too short to allow cell replication, the cell stops dividing and will ultimately die - a normal biological process. SpectraCell’s Telomere Test can determine the length of a patient’s telomeres in relation to the patient’s age. Age adjusted telomere length is the best method to date to assess biological age using structural analysis of chromosomal change in the telomere. Serial evaluation of telomere length is an indicator of how rapidly one ages relative to a normal population. Therapies directed at slowing the loss of telomere length may slow aging and age-related diseases.

GI Effects

Gastrointestinal function is important for general health. The intestinal tract contains significant amounts of bacteria which, when imbalanced, have been associated with IBS and IBD, immune disorders, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Balancing gut microflora is key for optimizing digestion and absorption of nutrients, as well as metabolic functions. Poor digestion and malabsorption can lead to immune dysfunction, nutritional insufficiencies, mental/emotional disorders, and autoimmune diseases.

Complete Hormones

Complete Hormones™ is the most comprehensive urinary hormone metabolism evaluation designed to assist in the prevention and treatment of hormone-related symptoms and conditions. This provides clues about menstrual irregularities, infertility, menopause, fatigue, breast cancer, and osteoporosis. This is a basic saliva hormone panel, which is great for people who prefer to avoid blooddraws and are undergoing hormone therapy.

Doctor’s Data

Urine Toxic Metals

Urine toxic and essential elements analysis is an invaluable tool for the assessment of retention of toxic metals in the body and the status of essential nutrient elements. Toxic metals do not have any useful physiological function, adversely affect virtually every organ system and disrupt the homeostasis of nutrient elements.  This test is often used in conjunction with IV Chelation treatment by Dr. Olivia Franks, ND.

Hair Toxic Element Exposure Profile

Extensive research established that scalp hair element levels are related to human systemic levels. The strength of this relationship varies for specific elements, and many researchers consider hair as the tissue of choice for toxic and several nutrient elements. Unlike blood, hair element levels are not regulated by homeostatic mechanisms. Thus, deviations in hair element levels often appear prior to overt symptoms and can thereby be a valuable preliminary tool for predicting the development of physiological abnormalities.

Meridian Valley Lab

24hour Urine Comp Plus with Thyroid

Many hormone tests are unable to get a holistic picture of your hormone levels. This is because hormone levels vary throughout the day so you may be measuring a peak or a trough and also important hormones like estriol and androstanediol can be missing or inaccurate in serum and saliva hormone tests. At Meridian Valley Lab (MVL), urinary hormone tests provide precise quantification via gas chromatography, mass spectrometry and proprietary laboratory procedures tied to exacting laboratory quality standards. 24 hour urine hormone tests allow you to quantify your production over a 24 hour period avoiding peaks and troughs and get a detailed view of how the hormones and metabolites may be effecting your current symptom picture.
