Prolotherapy

What is Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy is an injection of a dextrose and saline solution into damaged tissue. This triggers the healing cascade to heal those tissues that have been damaged or did not initially heal correctly. It stimulates the body's natural healing process to strengthen joints weakened by traumatic or overuse injury, acts to regenerate tissues, releases growth factors, increases blood flow, stabilizes joints and decreases pain.

What happens in a Prolotherapy appointment?

First, a new patient or established patient appointment will be done to gather health history and determine where the pain is coming from. Once that information is gathered, a treatment protocol will be planned and discussed, and an appointment for treatment made. The actual prolotherapy appointment takes about one hour to complete. The joint will be assessed and then the injections are administered.

What conditions can be treated with Prolotherapy?

  • Acute joint injuries
  • Chronic joint pain
  • Arthritis
  • Knee pain
  • Torn meniscus
  • Degenerative joint disease
  • Hip rotator cuff injuries and tears
  • Labral tears
  • Sprained ankles
  • Unstable joints
  • Loose ligaments

What is the recovery time following a Prolotherapy treatment?

Following the procedure you can walk on your own, but may require a driver depending on the location of the injections. There is normally a 24-48 hour window of post-injection discomfort. It is suggested that you take at least two weeks off sports and vigorous exercise. You can typically resume normal everyday activities post treatment.

What are the side affects of Prolotherapy?

There are little to no risks with this procedure because the dextrose solution that is injected to promote the healing is an all natural substance. Extreme care is taken to clean your skin prior to the procedure to avoid infection.

How will I respond to treatment to a Prolotherapy treatment?

Treatment response does vary from person to person, depending on the level of overall health. Healthy individuals tend to have a more reactive response to the treatment which benefits the overall outcome. Prolotherapy is typically recommended in a series of 3 to 4 treatments at 2 to 4 week intervals. Careful consideration at your initial appointment will be taken to determine how many treatments will be needed to offer you the best outcome.

What is the cost of a Prolotherapy appointment?

Each treatment is $250 per damaged area. This treatment is not billable to insurance.
